WHITE WATERS

When there were no motorways, the "raiders" would travel downstream during the spring thaw to take goods -and the wood of their rafts- from the pyrenees to the plains and the catalan coast. Since then, their memory has kept alive the spirit of risk and adventure, but now with the accent on enjoyment.

The Catalan rivers have some pleasant surprises in store for river sailors. The Noguera Pallaresa and the Garonne offer the enthusiast their rapids, crosscurrents and swirls which, with the spring thaw, become ideal scenarios for white water adventures. And, variety being the spice of life, the ways of enjoying the river are almost endless.

Pla de l'Estany, the Alt Empordà, and the counties of Alta Ribagorça and Pallars, with deep gorges in high mountain areas and breathtaking scenery on the lower slopes are counties where canyoning enthusiasts will find a visit well worth their while.

The Segre

The middle part of the River Segre, in areas such as Ponts and Camarassa, offers ideal facilities for beginners in canoeing. In the same stretch, the Rialb offers magnificent scenarios for gorge descents.

A model facility for practicing white water kayaking, the Segre Olympic Park (Seu d'Urgell) has hosted international-level water competitions. Built for the Barcelona Olympic Games in 1992, this park provides optimal, year-round facilities for practicing and learning canoeing, kayaking and rafting, using the Olympic white water canal (500 m), thanks to its mini-hydroelectric power station. Its water channelling system also enables the flow to br regulated to match the needs of both seasoned practitioners and beginners.

The Garona

On the Western edge of the Catalan Pyrenees, the Val d'Aran offers many natural attractions, for canyon descent enthusiasts too. It is here where the Garonne has its source. Linking the valley's villages like pearls on a necklace, this river also offers stretches such as Caos, Era Lossa and Era Tortuga that are ideal for white water activities such as rafting.

The Noguera Pallaresa

Rising in Pla de Beret, the Noguera Pallaresa passes through the Collegats gorge and flows into the Segre at Terradets. It is a river that awakens fierce passions: traditionally used by the 'almadieros' -raiers, in Catalan- it has become the paradise for white water sports: rafting, canoe-rafting, canyoning, kayaking or open kayaking.

In the heart of the Pyrenees (Pallars Sobirà), the Noguera Pallaresa offers 40 km of navigable water all year round, including summer, as its flow is regulated from the dams upstream. Along its length, this river combines relatively easy stretches for general enjoyment, such as the stretch between Llavorsí and Rialp (12 km), with more complicated stretches that are particularly difficult during the thaw (between May and June).
