Description of the region :
Penedés is a diverse, exciting region that offers everything from the relaxing beach life to the beautiful highlands, filled with green vineyards and local vinefarms. This region has many things you can do: You can visit the local, authentic wineries up in the country that offers a guided tour and wine tasting, or you can take the big wine tour at the world famous Freixenet. Similarly, you can go to the very popular, large white sandy beaches or find your own small and less visited bay and enjoy the warm waters of the Mediterranean. Additionally, staying in the Penedés region, you have Barcelona just around the corner to the east and Tarragona to the west – this provides plenty of options for day trips.
WINE PRODUCTION Penedès is especially known for its wine production, which is among the oldest in the wild and dates all the way back to 600 BC. It is also here that they invented Cava in 1872 - as a response to the French champagne. The part of the region that goes into the highland country has the optimal climate conditions for wine production- especially the many hours of sunshine annually. We can definitely recommend a visit at the vinefarms - from the big to the small. Especially the small, local and very authentic wineries can be a very special experience. It can be anything from small guided tours where you can see the procedure to simple bodegas, where you can taste the wine that comes from the surrounding fields. There is also the big wine tour at the world famous Freixenet that appeals to the whole family with wine tastings and small train rides - so if you like Cava, this is definitely worth a visit.
HUMAN TOWERS In Penedès, they are very good at making human towers. Castells or Human Towers are unique cultural phenomenon, which has its junction in Vilafranca del Penedès. Here, you can see how people together can achieve an enormous strength - the towers can reach up to 8-10 levels. It is on the UNESCO list of World Heritage, which aims to protect important cultural practices around the world. Talk to the local tourist office, to find out where you can experience this unique Catalan tradition.
SITGES Just 30km south of Barcelona, you will find the the sophisticated beach town of Sitges. With the Garraf Mountains in the background and the geographical location next to the sea provides a microclimate - this means that you can actually lie and sunbathe until October and from March. There is something for everyone. There are wonderful beaches in the city, which the children certainly will like, and a long beach promenade offers plenty of supplies in the form of ice cream parlors, cafes and delicious, cozy restaurants. VILAFRANCA DEL PENEDÉS This exciting, classy town lies further up in the country and has a high cultural value. Back in the Middle Ages, it was important city and it is still seen in the buildings and details. There is a medieval route in the city, which leads you through the city's ancient structures. Likewise, every Saturday in the city, there is a traditional market, which dates back to medieval times. Here there are now about 200 stalls selling all sorts of things. It is open from 8 AM to 2 PM.
