 La Masia del Monastério is, in short, a totally unique holiday home. This kind of situation and history concerning a holiday home is difficult to find. It is integrated in a great antique monastery and back in time it was frequently used by the monastery – it has among other things been the home of a priest. Moreover the interior is in a class of its own: The rooms have high ceilings and are equipped with antique and lavish furniture.

 When you arrive in the overwhelming monastery yard through the nearly majestic entrance, the holiday home is situated in the left corner, next to the monastery, which was founded back in the 12th century and thereby one of the historically most important buildings in the area. It is a pureprivilege to sit on one of the balconies of the house and watch the beautiful and historic monastery yard.

 The holiday house itself was built in the 18th century and has been listed as antique home and must be kept as it is. It has a rich history and was originally built as a home for retired monks. It has now been thoroughly renovated by the owners, whose family during long times has been related to the monastery.

If you want an authentic experience, there is a mass in the monastery every Sunday.

 When entering La Masia del Monastério you are met by one of the three sitting rooms of the house: A large room with a long rustic dining table, behind which there is a delightful sofa area with TV. This room has access to the patio with outdoor furniture, dining area and cooking area. There is also a door into a large kitchen, which is well equipped with the necessary kitchen tools. On the ground floor there is a toilet as well.

 You notice at once that the ceilings are high – to be more precise: 3,8 m. These dimensions are due to the fact that the house was built for retired monks, who had led a rough and contemplative life. The spaciousness should give them more freedom and avoid that they should think too much of themselves.

 

On the first and second floors are two sitting areas, a kitchen and in total 6 double rooms. Like the rest of the house the bedrooms are very spacious and the are two very large suites. These have both a large double bed, a sofa and a writing desk and direct access to a balcony with view over the monastery yard. Furthermore there are 4 other double rooms – all lavishly fitted out in the classical style. For these bedrooms there are 5 fine bathrooms: 4 with a shower and one with a bathtub.

 

The house has a very large patio of 3000 m2, which is completely private, and only for use by the guests. It is very long and stretches along the walls of the monastery. At the exit from the house you find a covered dining area, and next to this a cooking area with a big BBQ-grill and outdoor sink.

 

The garden is not a classic flower garden, but a more authentic garden with high old trees. In the other end of the long garden you will find the pool of the house. Here the owners have been creative: Since the house is listed for conservation, they were not allowed to build a complete swimming pool. Instead they chose to convert the old water basin into a pool, which means that the water in the pool is natural water from the mountains, and the surplus water runs further to a fountain in the garden. A big gate to the pool can be closed so that smaller children can’t enter the pool without the parents’ surveillance. If you want a larger swimming pool – maybe for swimming in lanes – there is a public swimming pool in the village, just 800 m. away.

 Furthermore there is a volley/badminton net in the garden for the active ones.

 In the neighbouring area you will find 3 restaurants and 3 bars that are worth a visit for getting an impression of the local life. In the bigger city, Valls has a market every Wednesday and Saturday and another market every Tuesday in a smaller town, 5 km. away. You can find beaches about 20 min. driving from the house and the owners will be pleased to share their knowledge of the less visited, a bit “secret” beaches.
