The beautiful private Castle Castell de Girona, is listed on Spain’s register of historic monuments, and offers a luxurious, historic and very unique accommodation with splendid panoramic views to a delightful countryside setting. The owners have one goal: to make your stay as unforgettable, relaxing and delicious as possible, and this can really be fulfilled in Castell de Girona as the castle is almost magical.
When you have visited more than 500 houses in Catalonia, Spain - in order to make a selection of lovely holiday homes - it is challenging to be really amazed. This is exactly what happened when visiting the 930m2 castle. The setting of the house, combined with the amazing structure of Castell de Girona, simply leaves you breathless. We do not normally use 50 pictures when showing a house on our website, but this time we had to in order to try to show that very special feeling the house creates. The castle itself consists of two buildings. A Tower from the 11th century and a more conventional square fortification added in the 14th century. The castle has even served as the home for the Bishop of Barcelona.
The construction, with the round tower in the middle of the castle, creates a very unique experience, as the round tower creates unique spaces, which can be explored all over the house. The jewel in the crown is the look out from the very top of the medieval tower. An excellent panoramic 360-degree view stretches all the way from the Pyrenees Mountains to their blending with the Mediterranean coast and the French border. Under the top terrace you will also find a small library with two astronomical telescopes. A perfect spot to stand, and explore the stars on a silent night.
When arriving at the castle you are greeted by the scent of lavender, with sunlight reflecting off the ancient olive tree and the inviting terrace. The outdoor area has several seating areas and an impressive view towards the country side.
The house has several different terraces, each with its own advantage. The garden offers a swimming pool area, with a seating area and a small bar area. The large terrace in front of the house has a sofa area as well as a dining area. Behind the castle is another little terrace area, which has direct access to one of the two kitchens in the house. The feature is very practical as it simply makes it very easy to enjoy the meals outside on the long warm summer nights. Away from the house, an authentic pizza-oven is constructed by pieces of rocks. Here, you can enjoy a true stone-baked pizza, or just benefit from the heath, if the evening is a bit chilly in May and September.
You enter Castell de Girona through the large beautiful gate from the main terrace. Here, you are greeted by a very spectacular furnished “courtyard”. The tower is in the very middle and you enter the castle by the stone stairs curving around the outside of the circular tower. This is where the energy of this ancient and historic home really touches the guests.
On the ground floor is the furnished courtyard, an ancient dining room, with a small wine cellar next to it and one of two kitchens (which leads directly to the terrace at the back side of the house). The kitchen contains all modern amenities. On the ground floor are also a laundry room and a toilet.
The second floor has a really large dining/ lounge area, with charming windows with “seatings for fiancées” (in old days they could sit here together and still be “watched” by the family). The second kitchen in the castle is situated in connection with the dining room on the second floor. The large area furthermore has a reading/chess area and a small library. Two of the seven bedrooms are also situated here and these two rooms are the only ones that share bathroom as all other rooms has bath en suite.
On the third floor you will find 5 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms, and the large and cozy upper living area. All bedrooms in the castle are pretty decorated, respecting the history of the house. All the 6 bathrooms have bath and shower. On the third floor the round tower will lead you to the library. Go to the very top of the tower and enjoy a morning coffee or early evening glass of wine while watching the sun rise or set from the circular tower’s sweeping 360-degree vista. Here you may see the night owls watch the stars and their constellations on the nighttime sky or enjoy the nightingale’s pretty songs.
A kind english lady, Jools, who is the caretaker of the Castle, lives in a seperate part of the castel, with her own garden. She will greet you and she is a brilliant cook and hence it is poosible to order meals at a supplementary cost. She will also be available to answer any questions you might have, make restaurant reservations, etc. Up to 6 hours per week of housekeeping is included in the price.
Additionally, the house is a perfect point of departure for exploring this interesting part of Catalonia. To the north, you will pass through the “Catalan Tuscany” with small fortified villages on hill-tops, often with excellent restaurants and you will arrive at the Mediterranean Sea with its long beaches, divided by small parts of rocks, with smaller more private beaches excellent for snorkeling.
In the other direction, the regional capitol Girona is really worth a visit and after Girona, the Banyoles lakes and the volcanic zone of La Garroxta with Besalú as the most beautiful of many charming towns.
Directly from the house, you can walk to the village with train station with trains to Barcelona and buses to Girona. You can also buy fresh bread and find the shops you need. In the other direction, you immediately enter one of Catalonia’s many natural parks with a lot of hikes in different difficulties.
