This 13th century property, La Molina Soterres, is situated in the most southern part of Catalonia between the Ebro river and the borders to the provinces of Valéncia and Aragón. In a unbelievably natural spot, you find this amazing antique watermill, situated in the mountains, 7 km. from the village Horta de Sant Joan. known because the painter Picasso lived here in two periods.

Remotely situated, accessible by a 4,5 km. forest track, you find this stunning location, with the waterfall right next to the house, so you can swim right under it, and enjoy its beauty from the terraces or the bedrooms of the house.

The owners Pilar and Jordi have done a fantastic job, carefully reforming the watermill, and furnishing it with tasteful furniture, preserving the authencity. The building has several floors and is constructed right on the side of a rock, which actually serve as one of the walls of the house.

As it is watermill, the water passes under the building, and in the lowest part, the machinery is still there. Here, there is also a toilet and a small kitchen, a barbecue and a long table has been installed, as an alternative to eating outside or in the dining room.

The house has several levels and most rooms face the waterfall. Below the main floor dedicated to dining room, kitchen and sofa corner, you find two bedrooms and a bathroom. Directly from the kitchen, you have access to the cosy sunny “morning terrace”, with the gorgeous view to the waterfall.

At the upper floor, you find two more bedrooms with panoramic view and another bathroom. At the top, there is loft, which sometimes are used for children, as there two extra beds. 

The outside atmosphere is hard to describe in words, as the location is very special. The waterfall gives a freshness and the surrounding rocks giving many shady corners and a feeling of being one with nature. The channel systems used to direct the water to create the power for the water mill, has been intelligently led to a  swimming pool, where this clean water, right from the spring few kilometres from the house is led through the 45 meter long swimming pool, and then on to the river again in the other end. You can also swim under the waterfall and different places in the river.

In the house, you find a lot of information about walking routes from the house, as it is an excellent place for this. The house is also perfect as base for exploring all the sights (wineyards, Ebro delta, Tortosa and beaches) of this southern part of Catalonia.

The house is sustainable with solar panels and generator, and to protect the micro-environment, there is no washing machine. Instead, the owners pick up your laundry every second day, and have it washed in the village.

IMPORTANT REGARDING ARRIVAL/GRAVEL ROAD:
The last 3.5 km. to La Molina Soterres is a gravel road with some difficult spots. We have stayed in the house ourselves, and if you come in a low car, it can be a problem on arrival if you are 4 people with suitcases. Pilar and Jordi can take the suitcases in their car from the village. During the stay it went well for us, as we knew the road better and the cars were not so heavily loaded. The most optimal will be an SUV, but it is possible to arrive in regular cars.

Our stay in in the water mill was wonderful the house itself is stunning the location idyllic, the fresh water pool was a pleasure to swim in. However I do feel that anyone thinking of renting this house should be advised that the road to the property is only suitable for certain vehicles, even more so if it is raining. [CATALONIA HOLIDAY LETTINGS: Sorry about this - We will update immediately - Thought we already had this noted..]
Would I rent this property again? Absolutely.

Notre séjour dans le moulin à eau était merveilleux, la maison elle-même est magnifique, l'emplacement idyllique, la piscine d'eau douce était un plaisir de nager. Cependant, je pense que quiconque envisage de louer cette maison devrait être informé que la route menant à la propriété est ne convient qu'à certains véhicules, d'autant plus s'il pleut. Est-ce que je louerais à nouveau cette propriété ? Absolument.

If getting away from it all is what you're after, then this incredible house is the place for you. Set in a beautiful valley 4.5 miles away from the nearest small, medieval town of Horta de Sant Joan. Highlights are a very large, outdoor (unheated) pool nestled in amongst the incredible countryside; a large and extremely efficient fire (we were there in January and the whole house was toasty-warm, there's also central heating); an "extra" kitchen downstairs - so useful; wonderful attention to detail where the delightful owner, Pilar, has carefully picked some interesting and fitting furniture, art, large earthen pots etc. But the highlight has to be your own, private waterfall, which can be seen from many of the rooms in the house - the hardy amongst us went into the freezing winter water! The drive down to the house is not for the faint hearted, a very long, steep, winding gravel/dirt track - takes about 10-15 mins from the road. There is no dishwasher or washing machine but Pilar collected our clothes, washed them and returned them to us beautifully folded. It is a special place.

Si vous cherchez à vous éloigner de tout, alors cette incroyable maison est faite pour vous. Situé dans une belle vallée à 7 km de la petite ville médiévale la plus proche de Horta de Sant Joan. Les points forts sont une très grande piscine extérieure (non chauffée) nichée au milieu de la campagne incroyable; un grand feu extrêmement efficace (nous y étions en janvier et toute la maison était bien au chaud, il y a aussi le chauffage central); une cuisine "supplémentaire" en bas - si utile ; merveilleuse attention aux détails où la charmante propriétaire, Pilar, a soigneusement choisi des meubles intéressants et appropriés, de l'art, de grands pots en terre, etc. Mais le point culminant doit être votre propre cascade privée, qui peut être vue depuis de nombreuses pièces de la maison - les plus courageux d'entre nous sont allés dans l'eau glaciale de l'hiver ! Le trajet jusqu'à la maison n'est pas pour les timides, un très long chemin de gravier / terre sinueux et escarpé - prend environ 10 à 15 minutes depuis la route. Il n'y a pas de lave-vaisselle ni de machine à laver mais Pilar a récupéré nos vêtements, les a lavés et nous les a rendus joliment pliés. C'est un endroit spécial.

Fantastisk sted midt i unik natur. Vi - incl. to teenagere - nød vores uge i huset i fulde drag, og vender meget gerne tilbage en anden gang. Søde og hjælpsomme ejere. Vi var glade for, at vi var forberedte på køreturen de sidste 4 km, og havde lejet en bil, der kunne holde til det. Manglende mobildækning blev heldigvis opvejet af wi-fi, men det er et opmærksomhedspunkt.

Absolute paradise. Away from it all but everything you could need. Hosts so helpful. Even drove our kids to Horta to catch the bus to Barcelona to save us the drive.
Could not recommend this place enough.

Awesome, magical and totally unique place, a Garden of Eden away from it all, our family group (including four 20-somethings) all loved it. The owners went out of their way to be helpful. The Molina is very comfortable. NB(1) darker in the main common kitchen/dining area than on the photos. NB(2) Not for all types of cars and not for certain types of drivers especially after rain: the very uneven, pot holed 4km mountainous dirt track with sharp ridges and scraping brambles was a real challenge for our ordinary 7 seater rental car (which is the only reason why I am giving 4 rather than full 5 stars). However its completely 'off piste' nature is clearly part of its magical uniqueness.

Thank you very much for your review. We have stayed in the mill ourselves, so we know about the road. Low cars fully loaded with persons and suitcases can have problems. What we did was to unload the persons and then drive the suitcases to the house. The owners also offer to take them in a van. As you mention, the reward by arriving is big :-)

This group arrived in September, after the summer was very busy on the road due to the canyoning area that we have upriver.

Yes, they were right, the road was bad in many specific points (it is also true that they rented a large long and low minivan to fit 7 people + luggage) upon arrival in Horta 2 people and luggage got into our car

This week two machines have been fixing the whole road, it does not seem the same, it is like a wide dirt road and parts with cement

I feel sorry for them if they had a bad time driving, as you say is part of the experience, our mill would not be the same if it passed the highway on the side.

Incredibly beautiful place to stay, ultimate relaxing atmosphere, wonderful and colorful nature all around, and a perfectly designed and equiped casa, which offers everything you need (when you don't mind doing the dishes yourself and are not in need for a washing machine). It is an absolutely one-of-a-kind experience to stay in la Molina and take a dip in the pond by the waterfall, a dive in the huge and unique swimming pool, or stroll a bit around the house, or gaze at the starts at night.
We have booked houses through Cataloniaholidaylettings before, which were all great experiences but la Molina was certainly our topmost favourite.
The owners are really friendly and helpful.
We definitely will come back sometime!

Un endroit incroyablement beau où séjourner, une atmosphère de détente ultime, une nature merveilleuse et colorée tout autour, et une casa parfaitement conçue et équipée, qui offre tout ce dont vous avez besoin (quand cela ne vous dérange pas de faire la vaisselle vous-même et que vous n'avez pas besoin d'une machine à laver ). C'est une expérience absolument unique de séjourner à la Molina et de se baigner dans l'étang près de la cascade, un plongeon dans l'immense et unique piscine, ou se promener un peu autour de la maison, ou contempler le commence la nuit.
Nous avons déjà réservé des maisons par le biais de Cataloniaholidaylettings, qui ont toutes été d'excellentes expériences, mais la Molina était certainement notre préférée.
Les propriétaires sont vraiment sympathiques et serviables.
