A wedding in Catalonia – an experience that lasts longer than the day itself

A wedding in Catalonia is not only about the ceremony and the celebration.

It is also about the days surrounding the wedding, when family and friends have time to be together, relax and share experiences.

When guests stay in one or more holiday homes in the area, the wedding becomes more than just a single day of celebration. There is time for slow mornings, shared dinners, relaxing by the pool and all the small moments that often become some of the best memories.

Our own wedding in Catalonia

We know from personal experience how special it can be. When we got married in Catalonia in 2013, we had family and friends with us from Denmark, staying in different holiday homes in the area.

It created a very special atmosphere around the wedding. There was time to be together before the day itself, enjoy the experiences afterwards and talk about all the moments we had shared.

Looking back today, we naturally remember the wedding day. But we remember just as clearly the time spent together around it. The meals, the conversations and the feeling that our nearest and dearest had travelled with us to share the experience.

This overall experience is exactly what makes a wedding in Catalonia different from a traditional wedding celebration.

More time with your guests

A wedding day often passes quickly, and many couples find afterwards that they barely had time to speak to all their guests.

When the wedding is combined with a stay in Catalonia, there is more time for each other. Guests are typically in the area for several days, which means that all the time together does not have to be squeezed in between the ceremony, dinner, speeches and party.

For example, you can gather for a dinner on arrival, enjoy a day by the pool or arrange a shared activity before the wedding. The day after, you can meet for a relaxed lunch or brunch.

The programme does not have to be packed from morning to evening. Often, it is the spontaneous moments that become the best ones.

The holiday home as a setting

The right holiday home can create a beautiful and relaxed setting for the wedding.

Some couples wish to hold the celebration itself at the holiday home, if the property and agreement with the owner allow it. Others use the house as a base for the couple, the family or a larger group of guests.

The holiday home can be used for, among other things:

  • a shared dinner before the wedding
  • preparations on the wedding day
  • reception and celebration
  • photos in the garden and surroundings
  • brunch or lunch the day after
  • a shared stay for family and friends

There is a great difference between the holiday homes. Some have large terraces and spacious common areas, while others consist of several apartments or separate buildings. This can be an advantage if families with small children, young guests and grandparents are all staying in the same place.

You are close to each other, but still have the opportunity to withdraw and enjoy some privacy.

Help with the planning

Planning a wedding abroad can seem overwhelming at first.

How do you find the right holiday home? Who provides the food? How should the guests be transported? And where do you find musicians and other local suppliers?

We have worked with authentic holiday homes in Catalonia since 2003, and over the years we have helped many couples turn their dream of a wedding in Catalonia into reality.

The things that may seem complicated when planning from Denmark are often easier for us to help with. We know the houses, the homeowners and the areas, and we have also built up a large network of local partners.

We typically help with:

  • choosing a holiday home for the couple and guests
  • contact and coordination with the homeowner
  • private chef or catering
  • guest transport
  • musicians and entertainment
  • wine tastings and local experiences
  • activities before and after the wedding
  • advice on practical matters

Local knowledge makes a difference

Some couples have a very clear idea of what they want their wedding to be like. Others simply know that they want to gather family and friends under the Catalan sun.

Both are a good starting point.

We often find that almost any idea can be made possible once we have explored the options. Recently, for example, we helped a couple find a saxophonist who could create exactly the right atmosphere for their celebration.

This is precisely the kind of wish where our local knowledge and network can make a real difference. It can be difficult to find the right person from home in Denmark, but much easier when you know the area and know who to ask.

Give your guests a shared experience

When guests travel to Catalonia to attend the wedding, the stay also becomes a holiday experience for them.

Catalonia offers many opportunities for trips and activities. Some may want to visit Barcelona, Girona or Tarragona. Others may prefer the beach, local markets, wine tastings or a quiet day by the pool.

The most important thing is not that everyone has to take part in everything. A good balance between shared activities and time on your own often creates the most relaxed experience.

It is also worth considering the different needs of your guests. Families with small children may need good sleeping arrangements and the option to prepare food, while older guests may prefer a room without too many stairs.

The right setting can make the stay more comfortable for everyone.

A wedding with room for personality

A wedding in Catalonia does not have to follow a fixed template.

It can be a simple dinner on the terrace with your closest loved ones, or a larger celebration with many guests, music and dancing. Some dream of long tables under the open sky, local dishes and wine from the area. Others prefer a more classic wedding celebration.

The holiday home and surroundings create the setting, but it is the couple’s own wishes that should shape the experience.

The most important thing is not the size of the wedding. The most important thing is that the setting matches the experience you wish to create together with your guests.

Memories for life

A wedding in Catalonia does not begin only when the ceremony starts, and it does not necessarily end when the last song has been played.

The experience begins when the guests arrive and continues through the days before and after the wedding.

That is how we experienced our own wedding in 2013. We remember the celebration, but we also remember the anticipation, the shared meals and the feeling of having our family and friends close to us.

We hear the same from many of the couples we have helped. When they look back, it is not only the table settings, the food or the music they remember. It is the overall experience and the time spent together with their guests.

We are happy to help you find the right setting and put you in contact with local partners who can help make your wedding in Catalonia an experience you will remember for the rest of your life.
